Morning Brief – Culture – Wednesday, October 11, 2017

Here are some big stories on culture for you from recent days:

Harvey Weinstein fired from the Weinstein Company – Harvey Weinstein is the most recent in a string of Hollywood scandals. He lost his own company earlier this week because of widespread allegations ranging from harassment to rape (more at the NY Times). As before, this has sparked a number of spinoff allegations including one against Ben Affleck (see here). Considering that culture is largely influenced by entertainment and politics and both appear to be rife with sexual misconduct we should be concerned. First, remember that our hope is not in culture or America, it is in Jesus Christ (see Romans 6:23). And second, focus on purity in your own life (Proverbs 7) and training the next generation in the way they should live (Proverbs 22:6).

10 Hardest Places for Girls to Go to School – BBC ran an article today on the 10 hardest countries in the world for girls to go to school (read the whole story here). The top 10 are: South Sudan, Central African Republic, Niger, Afghanistan, Chad, Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Liberia, & Ethiopia. 7 of these nations are land-locked central African nations making relief efforts expensive and complicated. Two of the remaining three are also in central Africa but on the western coast. Afghanistan is the only exception. All of these nations are war torn nations with heavy Muslim influence. I recently visit with an organization working in South Sudan, during the interview they told me 2.5 million people are living in refugee camps in the region, the largest of which houses 250,000 people. As a Christian, consider what you might can do for the least of these (Matthew 25:40).

Genderless Clothing – There is a fashion designer working on office apparel that is genderless (more here). All I’m going to say about this is: standby your faith, but do not forget to treat all people as people. Do not forget human decency even when you disagree. Teach your kids the same, to know what they believe and to stand firm in it, but to treat others with love.

Devotional Thought – The verses in Matthew 7:12-14 contain two ideas that are connected. The first is the Golden Rule, do to others as you would have them do to you. The second is the narrow way. You cannot forget to treat others the way you want to be treated, the way you want your kids and family to be treated. But you also cannot forget that there is only one way to the Father, Jesus Christ the Son. The way is truly narrow.
